Taps It is fitting that I am writing this on Memorial Day. In the last two months we have lost three of our fellow soldiers and friends - all lifetime members of the Northwest Chapter.
Winston Springer died two days after Easter on April 6th. Bill Bussey died May 14th in the evening. Col (ret) Len Morley died the third week in May.
Winston was 91 and lived in Ocean Park and Vancouver Wa. He landed at Normandy on D-Day and was wound about two months later. His wife, Alice, of 65 years proceeded him in death 6 days earlier.
Bill Bussey was a kind man who lived with his wife in La Pine, Or. Bill was a past president of our Northwest Chapter. He was on active duty from 1963 to 1966 and later served a number of years with the Oregon Army National Guard.
Col. Morley had been a 1st Sgt with the 42nd “Rainbow” Division during WWII, received a battle field commission and participated in the Liberation of the Dachau concentration camp. He later was the Battalion Commander of the 1/22nd Inf. in Vietnam. He was affectionately known as “Rawhide” by his men.
These men and their families will be remembered in our prayers and thoughts. They are part of the thread of the tapestry of our country and our chapter.
Effective immediately, we are establishing the “Winston Springer Memorial Scrape Book” for the Northwest Chapter. It will contain a page for each member of the chapter and a picture. We ask that each of you start to write a one or two page history/Bio of your self (be creative) Tell us where you are from about your family where and when you served. We would also like to have a picture of you while you were in uniform and after in later years. Start your “draft” now and we’ll send you more guidance in the next few weeks.
Annual Fall Reunion Sept 10-11 in Yakima, Wa. We will be meeting to rekindle old friendships, make new ones and swap a few stories (mostly true) as old and young soldiers do. Wives will be coming along to keep us honest and be part of the festivities.
It will be held at the Howard Johnson Plaza, 9 North 9th street. The Howard Johnson has given us a great price of $68 per room. This is “inclusive” of all taxes. Wow! We will have a hospitality room in the Peach Room starting on the evening of the 9th. This will be used as our hospitality/ base room for the duration of the reunion.
Friday, the 10th we will depart from the Howard Johnson at 8:30 am and go to the Yakima Firing and Training Center (YTC). As many of you know this belongs to the Ft Lewis Command and this is where the 4th ID trained extensively prior to their deployment to Vietnam in 1966.
We will be given a briefing by the commander of YTC on the usage of the center. We will then go to MATES (Maintenance and Training Equipment Site) where we will be given a tour and static equipment display of some of the Armies newest equipment. After lunch at YTC, we will go to Range Control were we will be briefed on the range facilities. During the period we are there, The Japanese Homeland Security Forces will be conducting training. They send 400 soldiers every year.
Saturday, a tour is being arranged of a local winery for your leisure. The annual membership meeting will later that afternoon. The Flame of Remembrance Dinner will be at 6:30 that evening to be followed by a speaker and our annual auction and raffle.
An agenda will follow this mailing in a few weeks. A Registration Flyer is enclosed. In making your registration with the Howard Johnson be sure to mention that this is for the Northwest Chapter of the 4th Infantry Division Assoc. Reunion in order to get the special rate. They have only block so many rooms for us. Be Early. We also need a number count early to get vehicles on the military reservation at YTC.
We hope you all can make it! It will be great Fun! Any questions call me at 425-334-6232.
